Software called spiders initially indexed the search engine using algorithms and meta tags. The increase in bandwidth increased the speed of linking websites and spiders today index websites according to the number of links they have in addition to algorithms and meta tags. The history of Search Engine Optimization is synonymous with the history of internet usage.
